Luis Enrique Delivers Blow to Manchester United Managerial Hopes
Manchester United's pursuit of a new permanent manager has hit a significant setback, with Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique strongly suggesting he will not be moving to Old Trafford this summer. The 55-year-old Spaniard, whose contract with PSG expires in 2027, has been heavily linked with the upcoming vacancy at United, but his latest comments indicate a firm commitment to his current club.
Enrique's Clear Summer Plans with PSG
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Enrique revealed he has already begun planning for the summer transfer window alongside PSG sporting director Luis Campos. "There will be small adjustments, just like last year," Enrique stated when questioned about potential signings. "We won't sign a lot of players." This declaration of continuity comes amid reports that Enrique is in advanced talks to extend his contract with the French champions until 2030.
The former Barcelona manager, who has won the Champions League with both clubs, is currently focused on guiding PSG through their semi-final clash against Bayern Munich as they chase another European crown. His pedigree and success at the highest level had made him an attractive option for United, who have been without a permanent manager since Ruben Amorim's departure in January.
Carrick's Strengthening Position at Old Trafford
With Enrique effectively ruling himself out of contention, interim manager Michael Carrick's prospects of securing the permanent role have received a substantial boost. The 44-year-old former United midfielder has overseen a remarkable turnaround since taking temporary charge, with the team now positioned to secure Champions League qualification with just two victories from their final six matches.
Carrick remained characteristically reserved about his future following Saturday's crucial 1-0 victory at Chelsea, but his affection for the club was evident. "I love being here," he told TNT Sports. "I understand the situation, it's a bit out of my hands. You want to be part of nights like this, part of special things, create a team. I haven't got a time frame for a decision."
Growing Support for Carrick's Permanent Appointment
Former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has emerged as one of Carrick's most vocal supporters, describing any decision not to appoint him permanently as "utterly ridiculous." Hargreaves emphasized Carrick's understanding of both the players and the unique pressures associated with representing Manchester United.
"Carras understands the players and that's probably why he's there," Hargreaves explained. "He understands the pressure of playing for this football club. He puts the boys in the right positions where they need to play to succeed and they're better in every capacity. So, to not give it to him after giving it to him, probably at the time when you wouldn't have expected it, would be utterly ridiculous."
Hargreaves added that Carrick's achievement in guiding United to the brink of Champions League qualification should eliminate any remaining doubts about his suitability for the role. "If he finishes third, I don't see how you couldn't give it to him. It wouldn't make any sense whatsoever."
United's Managerial Decision Looms
As the season approaches its conclusion, United's hierarchy faces a critical decision regarding their managerial future. Enrique's apparent withdrawal from consideration has simplified the landscape, with Carrick now appearing as the strongest candidate to continue in the role he has occupied on an interim basis.
The club's return to Champions League football, which would mark their first appearance in Europe's premier competition since 2023, represents a significant achievement that could prove decisive in the board's evaluation of Carrick's tenure. With the managerial market described as saturated with options, United's internal solution may ultimately prove to be their most logical choice.
