Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has heaped praise on Luis Diaz, who has been in sensational form since joining Bayern Munich last summer. The 29-year-old winger has scored 26 goals and provided 21 assists in 48 appearances for the German champions this season, a significant improvement on his Liverpool record of 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 games.
Thiago, now assistant manager at Barcelona, played alongside Diaz at Liverpool from January 2022 until his own departure in 2024. Speaking to Sky Sport Deutschland, he said: “They're having a spectacular season. I think they made the right call signing Luis. I know him from Liverpool. He's a fantastic player and person.”
Diaz helped Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups during his three-and-a-half-year stint at Anfield. However, Liverpool manager Arne Slot defended the decision to sell the Colombian, citing the club’s sustainable model. “If this club gets an offer like that for a 28-year-old, then this club, because it is built on sustainability, chooses to sell a player,” Slot said in February.
Bayern Munich have already secured the Bundesliga title this season and are preparing for the DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart. Despite missing out on the Champions League final after a semi-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago believes Vincent Kompany’s side have a bright future. “The team is fantastic, with a very good mix of experienced and young players. It's a pleasure to watch them play,” he added.
Liverpool, meanwhile, face a summer of transition with Mohamed Salah expected to leave, potentially prompting further investment in wingers. Reds legend Steven Gerrard has previously stated that the club misses Diaz’s presence on the left flank.
