Liverpool Sporting Director Richard Hughes Emerges as Target for Saudi Arabian Giants Al-Hilal

Liverpool could face a significant off-field challenge this summer as Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al-Hilal have reportedly shortlisted club chief Richard Hughes for their sporting director role. The 46-year-old, who joined the Reds at the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign, has become a pivotal figure during Arne Slot's tenure at Anfield.

Hughes' Influential Role and Liverpool's Transfer Activity

As sporting director, Hughes orchestrated Liverpool's remarkable summer transfer window, which saw the club break their transfer record with the acquisitions of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. The Reds invested approximately £449 million in total transfer fees, bringing in additional talents including Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Giovanni Leoni. This substantial squad overhaul followed Liverpool's Premier League title triumph in Slot's inaugural season.

However, the subsequent campaign has presented challenges, with Liverpool's title defence faltering early and new signings requiring time to adapt. These difficulties have coincided with renewed speculation about Hughes' future, with reports initially surfacing in January linking him to the Saudi Pro League.

Contract Situation and Al-Hilal's Interest

Despite being under contract with Liverpool until June 2027, Middle Eastern reports have suggested Hughes has already agreed to join Al-Hilal. The Telegraph has clarified that he is actually on a three-man shortlist for the sporting director position at the Saudi club. Al-Hilal have not yet contacted Liverpool regarding Hughes, and the Merseyside club are understood to be confident he will remain at Anfield.

Hughes maintains a close working relationship with Michael Edwards, the chief executive of football for Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group. Having not yet completed two years in his position, any potential move would see Hughes commence work at Al-Hilal in the summer.

Al-Hilal's Current Standing and Liverpool Connections

Al-Hilal, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and managed by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, currently sit second in the Pro League. They trail Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr by three points despite remaining unbeaten. The Riyadh-based squad features notable players including:

  • Karim Benzema
  • Ruben Neves
  • Joao Cancelo
  • Kalidou Koulibaly
  • Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Hughes may already be familiar with Al-Hilal, as the Saudi club have previously expressed interest in Liverpool star Mohamed Salah. This interest dates back to 2023 when Liverpool rejected a £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad for the Egyptian forward, and intensified in December following Salah's disagreement with manager Arne Slot.

Hughes' Background and Liverpool's Current Season

Hughes was recruited by Edwards from a similar role at Bournemouth, where he oversaw the appointment of Andoni Iraola. Upon joining Liverpool, Hughes expressed being "incredibly proud" to take up the position and has been supported with substantial financial backing from FSG.

Liverpool currently occupy fifth place in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by 21 points. Rather than contesting for the title, the team are battling to secure Champions League qualification for next season. Their immediate challenges include overturning a 1-0 deficit against Galatasaray in the Champions League last-16 second leg at Anfield, followed by an FA Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City.
