Liverpool's Goalkeeper Crisis Intensifies After Derby Injury Blow
Liverpool's backup goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was forced off on a stretcher with a worrying injury during the first Merseyside Derby of the season at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. The 25-year-old Georgian, who had been deputising for the injured Alisson Becker, now faces a significant spell on the sidelines himself.
Dramatic Collision Leads to Serious Concern
The incident occurred in the 54th minute following Beto's equaliser for Everton. The Toffees striker cancelled out Mohamed Salah's opening goal with a sliding tap-in from close range, but unfortunately collided heavily with Mamardashvili as both he and Liverpool defender Andy Robertson followed through with the play. Liverpool's medical staff immediately attended to the stricken goalkeeper before carefully removing him from the pitch on a stretcher.
Woodman Makes Unexpected Premier League Debut
Mamardashvili's injury meant third-choice Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was called upon to play the remainder of the fiercely contested Merseyside derby. This marked Woodman's first Premier League appearance for Arne Slot's side since joining from Preston North End last summer. The 27-year-old, who has previously played for Newcastle and Bournemouth in the top flight, had only made one previous appearance for Liverpool - during their 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace in October.
Growing Injury List Compounds Liverpool's Problems
The goalkeeping crisis adds to Liverpool's mounting injury concerns this season. First-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered last month, while several other key players are also unavailable:
- Hugo Ekitike has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and the World Cup with an Achilles injury
- Joe Gomez continues his recovery from a muscular problem
- Giovanni Leoni is nursing a knee complaint
- Wataru Endo faces several more weeks out with an ankle issue
- Jayden Danns and Conor Bradley are also on the treatment table
Everton Also Suffer Defensive Blow
Later in the match, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite was also taken off on a stretcher in visible distress, having appeared to suffer a hamstring injury. The double blow of defensive injuries for both sides added a sombre note to what had been an otherwise thrilling derby encounter.
The extent of Mamardashvili's injury remains unclear, but early indications suggest he could face a lengthy absence. Liverpool manager Arne Slot now faces serious selection headaches as he prepares his squad for upcoming fixtures with only one fit senior goalkeeper available.
