Liverpool's New Defender Jeremy Jacquet Undergoes Shoulder Surgery
Liverpool Football Club have received concerning news regarding their £60 million summer signing, Jeremy Jacquet. The young defender has undergone successful shoulder surgery after fracturing his shoulder during a match against Lens last month, effectively ending his stint with French Ligue 1 club Rennes.
Recovery Timeline and Liverpool's Concerns
While Rennes confirmed the surgery was successful in a brief statement on March 12, they did not provide a specific timeline for Jacquet's return to action. However, French publication Sport has suggested the recovery period is likely to span between eight and twelve weeks.
The same report indicated that Liverpool were 'panicking' about the extent of Jacquet's injury, as the club had already been envisioning him forming a defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the start of the upcoming season. This setback is expected to delay his integration into the team, with the defender likely to have a light pre-season and arrive at Anfield lacking match fitness.
Transfer Details and Liverpool's Defensive Plans
Liverpool secured Jacquet's signature by outbidding Chelsea, agreeing to a £60 million deal with Rennes. The transfer includes £55 million paid upfront, with an additional £5 million due in performance-related add-ons. His impending arrival comes as Liverpool prepare for another reshuffle in their starting lineup, this time focusing on defensive reinforcements.
Last summer, the club recruited Giovanni Leoni from Parma, but his debut season was abruptly halted when he suffered a severe knee injury against Southampton in the Carabao Cup. This context makes Jacquet's injury particularly concerning for Liverpool's defensive planning.
Manager's Perspective on the Signing
Speaking last month about the acquisition of Jacquet, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his enthusiasm for the young talent. 'Very pleased because first of all he's a very big talent, maybe even more than a talent – but we speak about talent because of his age of course,' Slot said.
He continued, 'Second of all, because we weren't the only ones interested in him. So another big compliment for the people working every single day, so hard, that we were able to sign such a big talent. Another example of the model we are using at this club. Young, very talented players, sometimes at the start of their careers, sometimes already a few years in.'
Slot emphasized the club's strategy, stating, 'But always players that are young and can improve us and help us for the short but definitely also for the long term. We've signed a lot of them recently and I've said many times that the mid-to-long-term future, but even the short-term future, of this club is in a very, very good place.'
The injury to Jeremy Jacquet represents a significant setback for Liverpool's immediate defensive plans, though the club remains optimistic about his long-term contribution once he completes his recovery period.
