Liverpool 'scary' warning issued and Wirtz injury update
Liverpool 'scary' warning and Wirtz injury update

Liverpool have been told they look 'scary' for the rest of the Premier League after their 2-0 win over Brighton, while midfielder Florian Wirtz has moved to ease injury fears.

Sunday's victory at Anfield ended Brighton's run of four straight wins and five consecutive clean sheets, with a Pascal Gross own goal and an Alexander Isak strike securing the points. Liverpool also became the first side in the Premier League to prevent Brighton from scoring this season.

The result marked a fourth successive victory for the Reds since their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City earlier this month, with Andoni Iraola's side finding their feet after a shaky start to his tenure.

Williams issues 'scary' warning

Match of the Day pundit Ashley Williams believes Liverpool are instilling fear into their competitors after gaining momentum following a sluggish start to the campaign.

Williams pointed to the form of key performers including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, and suggested the Reds could soon be challenging Arsenal and Manchester City.

"Iraola is the type of manager that defends well," the Welshman said on Match of the Day. "He doesn't waste time and try to build up too slowly. If he can go fast, with the pace that he has at the top of the pitch, then he does it.

"Now he has got those players like Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. If they are all fit and they are on the pitch, he is not going to waste any time. They get the ball forward, they are dynamic, and we know it is difficult to defend against pace - especially pace and willing runners in behind. We are seeing signs of an Iraola team, which is scary for the rest of the league as they just creep up."

Wirtz provides injury update

Wirtz has reassured fans that the knock he sustained against Brighton "isn't too bad." The German was brought on in the 65th minute before appearing to twist his ankle in a challenge.

The incident sparked considerable anxiety, particularly given the impressive form the £116million midfielder had shown during the match. However, Wirtz was swift to ease concerns following the final whistle.

"I think it should be alright," he said. "It's not too bad. I don't know much yet, we have to check it, but it won't be long."

Supporters will be hoping to see Wirtz feature when Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, a fixture that sees the Reds come up against a side led by former Anfield legend Xabi Alonso, who previously managed Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen.
