The multi-ball system, introduced in the 2022/23 season, mandates that outfield players must retrieve the ball themselves or go to a cone, with only goalkeepers exempt when restarting from a goal kick. Premier League guidance states that participants must not interfere with the system, and any failure to follow protocol can lead to investigation and possible regulatory action.
While Liverpool's breaches are unlikely to result in a fine, the club can expect a formal warning. The Premier League has previously fined clubs for repeated violations, notably Aston Villa, who received a £125,000 penalty in August and were barred from using the multi-ball system for their first three home league matches this season.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have not lodged a complaint, and both Liverpool and the Premier League have declined to comment. The league emphasised that adherence to the rules is vital to prevent home clubs from gaining a competitive advantage.
On the pitch, Liverpool manager Arne Slot lamented his side's fourth consecutive defeat, highlighting defensive lapses and missed chances. 'It's almost impossible to win a big game with a negative set-piece balance,' he said, referencing the decisive goal.
