Eddie Howe has backed Anthony Gordon to lead Newcastle United's attack when they face Liverpool at St James' Park on Monday, despite the ongoing absence of Alexander Isak. With the Swedish striker still unavailable due to a transfer stand-off that shows no sign of resolution before the September 1 window closes, Howe is relying on Gordon's versatility and pace.
Gordon impressed in the goalless draw against Aston Villa last weekend, using his energy to cause problems and drawing a red card from Ezri Konsa. However, Newcastle struggled to break down Villa's defence after that. Howe remains confident in Gordon's ability to perform as a central striker, noting that he has done so effectively in the past.
“He’s done it enough to do the job really well for the team,” Howe said. “I have no issue playing him there, both as a starter and a substitute. He plays differently to other strikers, but that can be a positive. He’s got devastating pace, a really good work ethic, and he’s scored goals.”
Liverpool's defence has come under scrutiny after conceding twice in a 4-2 win over Bournemouth last weekend, and they also lost the Community Shield on penalties after a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. Howe believes Gordon's pace can exploit any vulnerabilities in Arne Slot's side.
Newcastle are expected to field the same starting XI that faced Villa, giving Anthony Elanga a home debut on the right flank. Jacob Ramsey and Malick Thiaw are also in contention for their first appearances, while Aaron Ramsdale will remain on the bench behind first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope.
