Lamine Yamal is expected to be fit for the upcoming World Cup despite being ruled out for the remainder of the club season, according to his club Barcelona. The 18-year-old Spanish sensation sustained a hamstring injury during Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo in LaLiga on Wednesday evening, sparking immediate concerns about his availability for the summer tournament.
Yamal had scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, coolly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. However, as he moved to celebrate, he suddenly pulled up, signalling to the bench before collapsing to the ground while clutching the back of his left leg. He was promptly substituted by Roony Bardghji, and fears of a serious hamstring tear prompted swift scans to assess the damage.
Barcelona's Official Update
On Thursday afternoon, Barcelona released a statement providing clarity on Yamal's condition. The club confirmed: "The tests carried out have confirmed that first-team player Lamine Yamal has a hamstring injury in his left leg (biceps femoris muscle). The player will follow a conservative treatment plan. Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of the season, and he is expected to be available for the World Cup."
This update comes as a significant relief for Spain, who were anxiously awaiting news on their teenage star. Yamal played a pivotal role in Spain's triumph at Euro 2024 when he was just 16 years old, earning the Young Player of the Tournament award. Spain has only won the World Cup once in their history, back in 2010, and will rely heavily on Yamal's creativity and skill in their quest for a second title.
World Cup Timeline and Recovery
The World Cup begins in just over seven weeks, with Spain's opening match against Cape Verde scheduled for 15 June. Medical experts suggest that a minor hamstring tear typically requires around five weeks to heal, leaving Yamal with ample time to recover and regain match fitness before the tournament. Barcelona currently hold a nine-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga, but their Champions League campaign ended after a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.
Yamal is not the only young talent facing a hamstring issue ahead of the World Cup. Chelsea's Brazilian star Estevao also suffered a hamstring injury last weekend, casting doubt on his participation in the tournament. However, for Spain, the outlook is now positive as they prepare to welcome back their prodigious talent for the global showpiece.
