During the 16th frame, with Wilson leading 9-6, a spectator encouraged him with 'Go on, Kyren!' to which he replied 'I'm trying!' prompting laughter from the crowd. He then added, 'Oh, I hate this game sometimes!'
TNT Sports commentator Philip Studd remarked that Wilson would enjoy the game if he won the £350,000. Co-commentator Neal Foulds noted that Higgins likely would not have appreciated the remark, as he was struggling at 9-6 down. Wilson went on to take the frame and seal the victory.
Higgins, seeking his first Masters win in 20 years, made several errors in the final. He had shown strong form leading up to the match but was ultimately outplayed. Speaking after the match, Wilson said it was an honour to share the table with an idol and described the contest as a dogfight, adding that he always seems to do things the hard way.
Higgins admitted he was 'just useless' despite fantastic crowds and conditions, and praised Wilson as a great champion. The match was attended by approximately 2,000 fans at Ally Pally.
