Kompany discharged from hospital after collapse

Bayern Munich CEO Max Eberl has confirmed that Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, following his collapse at the club's training ground last Friday. The former Manchester City captain had been watching reserve team training when he collapsed, having been unwell beforehand and missing the pre-match press conference before the Champions League clash with Arsenal.

Kompany was taken to hospital, where his condition was described as stable. On Tuesday, the German club confirmed that the head coach had left hospital.

Recovery and Diagnosis

"Given the circumstances, he's doing well," Eberl told German broadcaster ARD. "He was discharged from the hospital today. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."

Eberl also confirmed that Kompany had been suffering from a meningeal irritation, which affects the brain's protective layers and is seen as a warning sign for other conditions. Eberl stressed that Kompany will now return home to rest.

Return to the Touchline

When asked about a timeline for Kompany's return, Eberl replied: "I am very confident that he will be back on the touchline, operating at 100 per cent, very soon." In the meantime, assistant coach Aaron Danks, who worked with Kompany at Anderlecht, has been running first-team operations.

"I explained to him that we would be having no football conversations," Danks said last week. "It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's okay. All the football operations are in our hands and we'll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward."

Career and Legacy

Kompany made 360 appearances for Manchester City after joining from Hamburg in 2008, winning the Premier League four times, two FA Cups, four Carabao Cups and two Community Shields.

During his time at Burnley, Kompany was tipped by Pep Guardiola to one day become City's head coach. "He will be back sooner or later. His destiny to be manager of City is already written in the stars," Guardiola said in 2023. "It's going to happen. I don't know when, but it's going to happen. It's my feeling. Maybe I am wrong." Guardiola left City in the summer, with Enzo Maresca chosen as his replacement.
