The New York Knicks completed the largest comeback in NBA finals history on Wednesday night, overturning a 29-point deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden. OG Anunoby’s tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining secured the victory, giving the Knicks a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The Spurs dominated the first half, leading 76-49 at the break – the largest half-time advantage by a visiting team in finals history. Victor Wembanyama scored 24 points, and San Antonio shot 11 of 16 from three-point range in the opening quarter. However, the Knicks held the Spurs to 14 points in the third quarter and outscored them 58-30 in the second half.
Jalen Brunson scored 36 points and added seven assists, while Anunoby finished with 33 points and seven three-pointers, both playoff career highs. The Knicks took their first lead with 1 minute 22 seconds left on a Brunson lay-up, and after San Antonio regained the advantage, Anunoby tipped in Brunson’s missed three-pointer with 1.2 seconds on the clock.
“We’re a resilient group,” Anunoby said. “We’ve been through a lot. We’ve come back plenty of times.” The previous record for a finals comeback was 24 points, set by the Boston Celtics in 2008. The Knicks can secure their first championship since 1973 with a win in Game 5 in San Antonio on Saturday.
