Klopp's Transfer Demand for Milner Rejected by Liverpool Board
Liverpool's hierarchy denied Jurgen Klopp's plea to keep James Milner at Anfield, a decision made half a year before the German manager revealed his planned exit from the club. This revelation sheds light on internal dynamics preceding Klopp's departure.
Milner's Illustrious Liverpool Career Under Klopp
James Milner, who joined Liverpool in 2015 under Brendan Rodgers, evolved into one of Klopp's most trusted players during their eight-year collaboration. The former England international secured six major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, cementing his legacy at the club.
Despite his reduced role in the starting lineup, with only seven league starts in his final season, Milner remained a vital squad member. Klopp highly valued his professionalism and leadership, campaigning vigorously to extend the midfielder's contract beyond summer 2023.
Board Veto Leads to Milner's Brighton Move
Despite Klopp's efforts, the club's top brass vetoed the request, leading to Milner's free transfer to Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of the 2022/23 season. Klopp later paid a heartfelt tribute, describing Milner as "the role model" for his exceptional attitude and daily readiness.
Klopp remarked, "A pleasure and a challenge. In the same moment [it] means a pleasure because of his exceptional attitude, really. I think for a lot of experienced players you use from time to time the word 'role model'. But Millie is the role model." He noted the challenge of managing Milner's mood when not starting, comparing it to Lucas Leiva's situation.
Milner Confirms Klopp's Wishes Were Overruled
Milner himself confirmed that Klopp had wanted him to stay, but the club decided otherwise. He stated, "It's all good because the manager wanted to keep me - which as a player is what you want. Obviously the club decided a different way. In my head it felt like it could be a good time, so I'm content with how it's all come about."
He added that after not hearing from the club for about three weeks, he had mentally prepared to leave, acknowledging the possibility of returning to play in front of the Kop in the future.
Timing Coincides with Klopp's Shock Departure
Milner's emotional exit occurred just six months before Klopp's shocking announcement in January 2024 that he would step down at the season's end, citing a lack of energy after nearly nine years in charge. This sequence of events highlights a period of transition for Liverpool.
Two years later, Klopp serves as head of football at Red Bull, while Milner, at 40, continues his Premier League career. Recently, he matched Gareth Barry's all-time Premier League appearance record of 653 games, coming off the bench for Brighton in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.
Milner has an opportunity to increase his record when Brighton faces Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup fourth round, adding a poignant chapter to this ongoing story.
