Khadija Shaw has signed a four-year contract with Manchester City, making her the world's highest-paid women's footballer, after a dramatic U-turn. The Jamaica striker will earn significantly more than £1 million per season until 2030, according to multiple sources.
Shaw, the Women's Super League Golden Boot winner for a third consecutive season, had indicated earlier in May that she would leave City as her existing deal expired this summer. However, over the past 48 hours, rapid progress in discussions led to her signing the new deal on Monday morning.
The 29-year-old announced the news during City's trophy parade on Monday evening, to the surprise and delight of fans. She said: 'I'm so happy to be at this incredible club for another four years. I've always said that Manchester City feels like home.'
Manchester City's director of football, Therese Sjögran, described the deal as 'a huge statement from City that we've secured the services of one of the best centre-forwards in the world.'
The news leaves Chelsea needing to sign a top-level striker this summer, as they had been favourites to secure Shaw's signature following Sam Kerr's departure.
