Sam Kerr is set to play her first game for the Matildas in almost two years, with coach Joe Montemurro all but confirming the striker's involvement in upcoming friendlies against Wales and England. Kerr has not played for Australia since November 2023 after suffering an ACL tear in January 2024.
Montemurro also expects injured forward Mary Fowler to be back playing for Manchester City by the end of the year, providing a boost ahead of next March's Asian Cup. Fowler, 22, suffered an ACL tear in April and is already back running.
Kerr returned for Chelsea last month, scoring her 100th goal for the club. Montemurro said she has rediscovered her passion for the game. He confirmed Kerr has a good chance of making the squad for the matches on 25 and 28 October, though she will be on limited minutes.
Regarding the captaincy, which has been held by Steph Catley in Kerr's absence, Montemurro said he has not discussed it yet and will assess it closer to the first game.
