Luis Diaz Pays Emotional Tribute to Diogo Jota After Dream Bayern Munich Debut

Luis Diaz made a dream debut for Bayern Munich, scoring in a 2-1 victory over Stuttgart to win the German Super Cup, and paid an emotional tribute to former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota. The Colombian winger, who joined Bayern for £65.5 million in July, mimicked Jota's trademark gaming console celebration after scoring a header in the 77th minute.

Diaz's transfer came weeks after Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, tragically died in a car crash. In a statement confirming his departure from Liverpool, Diaz gave a special mention to Jota, with whom he played for three-and-a-half years at Anfield. The tribute on Saturday marked the first competitive action for Diaz at Bayern, having featured in three pre-season friendlies.

Bayern took the lead through Harry Kane in the 18th minute, but Stuttgart pushed back in the second half. Manager Vincent Kompany kept faith in Diaz, who was rewarded with a rare header from a Serge Gnabry cross. Stuttgart pulled one back through Jamie Leweling in stoppage time, but Bayern held on to lift the trophy for the first time since 2022, now named after club legend Franz Beckenbauer.

Kane said after the match: 'That's how we wanted to start the season, with a good feeling and a title. It was a short summer break but we've worked hard. The way we played today was good.' Kompany added: 'The title is extra important because it's the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. It's never easy in Stuttgart, but we came here and delivered.'
