Former Manchester United youngster Willy Kambwala has opened up about his first encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo, describing it as far from cordial. The defender, now at Villarreal, recalled a training ground confrontation that escalated before a surprising reconciliation in the sauna.
Kambwala, who made his senior debut for United in December 2023, said his aggressive style irritated Ronaldo during a session. The Portuguese forward reportedly complained to the coaches, which the youngster did not appreciate. 'My first contact with Cristiano wasn’t friendly,' Kambwala told Orange Sports. 'I’m a very aggressive person and I like challenges and confrontations. That bothered him a bit.'
After training, the two met in the sauna, where Ronaldo asked Kambwala to stay for a private chat. The veteran praised the defender's intensity and aggression, easing the tension. 'We talked as if nothing had happened. It was amazing. He told me he admired my intensity and aggression,' Kambwala added.
Kambwala moved to Villarreal in a deal that could reach £9.6 million, but his season has been disrupted by injuries. Meanwhile, Ronaldo has spoken generally about modern youngsters lacking hunger, saying on Talk TV: 'The mentality is not the same, they are not suffering.'
