Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has called for Jordan Henderson to be awarded an OBE or MBE for his role in organising the 'Players Together' campaign, which sees footballers contribute financially to the NHS during the coronavirus crisis.
Henderson, the Liverpool captain, has been a driving force behind the initiative, which has seen stars such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mason Mount join the effort. The campaign came after health secretary Matt Hancock criticised top-flight players for not taking pay cuts.
Collymore told the Mirror: 'When the New Year gongs are announced we should be hearing Jordan Henderson OBE or MBE - simple as that. The conscience he has shown football these past couple of weeks is more important than any trophy he will ever lift for Liverpool.'
The former Reds striker added that Henderson's actions show footballers 'put a lot more back into their communities than they let on', and described him as 'the quiet man who got things done - both on the pitch and off it'.
Henderson has enjoyed a successful 12 months, captaining Liverpool to Champions League and Club World Cup glory, and leading them to the brink of a first Premier League title.
