Nathan Jones Claims Wrexham Were ‘Gifted’ Win as Feud Reignites

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has reignited his feud with Wrexham supporters after claiming his side ‘gifted’ the hosts a 1-0 victory at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday. Jones, who previously labelled Wrexham a ‘circus’ last season, was taunted by home fans throughout the match and responded by criticising their behaviour in his post-match press conference.

The decisive moment came in the 77th minute when Charlton substitute Onel Hernandez handled a cross from James McClean, conceding a penalty that Josh Windass converted. Jones insisted Wrexham had not created clear chances before the incident. ‘Wrexham needed that today. They needed us to gift them something and we did. I didn’t see them scoring and I didn’t see them breaking our defence,’ he said.

Jones also took aim at the Wrexham supporters, claiming they were quiet except when chanting at him. ‘Obviously, we didn’t really hear Wrexham too much or the only thing they do is the chant I gave them,’ he said. He added that his squad was depleted by illness and injury, describing the venue as a ‘Bermuda Triangle’ for his team.

Wrexham fans reacted with derision on social media, with one writing: ‘Must’ve been a different game to the one I watched and heard from behind the goal.’ Another said: ‘Men against boys second half. Stop making excuses.’ The defeat ended Charlton’s five-match unbeaten run, while Wrexham secured their third consecutive home win.
