Chelsea legend John Terry has broken his silence in a powerful defence of former Blues owner Roman Abramovich, delivering a scathing critique of what he describes as the 'disgusting' treatment of the Russian billionaire by British authorities.
The former England captain, who lifted numerous trophies under Abramovich's ownership, spoke passionately about the man he credits with transforming Chelsea into a European powerhouse.
'A Lovely, Lovely Man'
Terry didn't hold back in his assessment of Abramovich's character, telling reporters: 'He was a lovely, lovely man. What he did for the football club, but also behind the scenes as well - he helped so many people with charities and stuff that nobody knows about.'
The emotional tribute highlights the personal connection Terry maintained with the former owner, suggesting there was much more to Abramovich than the public persona.
The Fallout from Sanctions
Abramovich's assets were frozen by the UK government in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a move that ultimately forced the sale of Chelsea to Todd Boehly's consortium.
Terry expressed particular dismay at how quickly Abramovich went from being celebrated to being ostracised: 'The treatment he received was disgusting, really. From the moment he came in, he changed not just Chelsea but the whole Premier League.'
Transforming English Football
The former defender emphasised Abramovich's revolutionary impact on English football, noting how his investment raised standards across the entire league.
'He set new benchmarks for success and ambition that forced every other club to elevate their game,' Terry stated, acknowledging the wider legacy beyond Chelsea's trophy cabinet.
Terry's comments represent one of the most vocal defences of Abramovich from within the football community since the sanctions were imposed, revealing the deep loyalty the Russian oligarch inspired among those who worked closely with him at Stamford Bridge.
