Jockey Kielan Woods has been taken to hospital for medical checks following a concerning fall at Fontwell racecourse on Wednesday, creating a health scare just days before his scheduled ride in Saturday's prestigious Grand National at Aintree.
Precautionary Hospital Visit After Nasty Incident
The Irish jockey was unseated from Mammies Boy at the sixth flight during the 2m3f handicap hurdle and appeared to be kicked by the following horse, Galactic Charm, in what observers described as an ugly-looking incident. Despite the dramatic nature of the fall, trainer Nick Scholfield has provided reassuring news about Woods' condition.
"I've been in touch with Kielan and he's gone for a precautionary check at Chichester hospital," Scholfield told Racing Post. "He was sore in the pelvis area after being kicked, but hopefully it's not too bad. He seemed in good spirits and, as far as I know, it's nothing very serious."
Grand National Participation in Question
Woods is scheduled to ride Marble Sands in Saturday's Aintree showpiece, one of 34 confirmed runners and riders for this year's Grand National. The jockey has previously partnered the David Killahena and Graeme McPherson-trained horse at the Grand National festival, achieving a sixth-place finish in the 2023 Sefton Novices' Hurdle and 12th position in last year's Topham Handicap Chase.
His last appearance in the Grand National came in 2021 when he fell aboard Ami Desbois, and he has never won the famous race. The timing of this incident creates uncertainty about his participation in one of racing's most significant events.
Strong Field for Saturday's Race
This year's Grand National features a formidable lineup headed by the past two winners, I Am Maximus and Nick Rockett, both trained by Willie Mullins. The Irish trainer will be hoping to secure a hat-trick of victories in the iconic race.
Favourite I Am Maximus, who finished second last year following victory the previous year, is again strongly fancied to be competitive. Jockey Paul Townend will ride I Am Maximus, while Patrick Mullins has opted to switch from Nick Rockett to Grangeclare West.
Notable Contenders and Historical Context
Tom Bellamy, fresh from his first Cheltenham Festival winner last month, will ride last year's winner Nick Rockett. I Am Maximus is attempting to become the first horse to carry top weight to victory since the legendary triple winner Red Rum achieved this feat in the 1970s.
Another significant threat comes from trainer Gordon Elliott, who has three National winners to his name. Elliott fields five runners including Gerri Colombe, Firefox, and Favori De Champdou, who was the beaten favourite in the Cross Country Chase at the recent Cheltenham Festival.
The racing community will be closely monitoring Woods' recovery progress as the Grand National approaches, hoping the popular jockey can overcome this setback to compete in one of the sport's most challenging and celebrated events.
