Jockey Hospitalised After Serious Fall at Huntingdon Racecourse

Conditional jockey Callum Pritchard was transported to hospital for X-rays following what has been described as a nasty incident during racing at Huntingdon on Thursday. The incident occurred during a two-mile maiden hurdle event, causing significant concern among racing professionals and spectators alike.

Dramatic Fall During Maiden Hurdle Event

Pritchard was riding the JP McManus-owned hurdler Limier d'Arthel when the pair came down at the first flight. The French recruit, making his first outing in 648 days, jumped high and landed steeply, giving himself little chance of remaining upright. As the Philip Hobbs and Johnson White trainee started to run loose, he galloped over his rider and knocked Pritchard's helmet off in the process.

Medical teams rushed to assist the fallen jockey, leading to a short delay in proceedings. Officials made the decision to bypass the obstacle on the final circuit, but notably no protective screens were deployed around Pritchard, who could be seen lying on the track during live television coverage of the race.

Stewards Enquiry and BHA Investigation

A stewards enquiry was immediately convened to consider why screens were not used to shield Pritchard from view. The clerk of the course was interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. Following their evidence, a report was forwarded to the head office of the British Horseracing Authority for further consideration.

The race itself was eventually won by the 2-5 favourite Double Measure, with officials delaying the next race by nine minutes to allow Pritchard to be moved off the track for further medical assessment.

Jockey's Condition and Professional Response

Pritchard's agent Sam Stronge confirmed that he had spoken to his client several hours after the fall. "Callum was taken to hospital for X-rays on his leg," Stronge reported. "He got stood on by the horse. He hopes he will be OK and is in good spirits."

Former jockey Daryl Jacob, who was on punditry duty at Huntingdon, expressed his concern about the incident. "It was a really nasty incident," Jacob stated. "These jockeys, they are tough as old boots. Whenever they can get up they will straight away and when he was down and they bypassed the third last, to me that is always worrying. I wish him a speedy recovery."

Recent Success Contrasts with Current Setback

The incident comes just days after Pritchard celebrated his biggest win of the jumps season. His mount Imperial Saint landed a gamble for punters in the Sky Bet Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock, providing a significant career highlight for the conditional jockey.

The racing community now awaits further updates on Pritchard's condition while the BHA considers the circumstances surrounding the incident and the absence of protective screens during the medical response.
