Snooker icon Jimmy White was left visibly furious during his World Championship qualifying match on Monday, angrily gesturing towards a spectator after fluffing a pivotal shot in his agonising defeat. The veteran player, a six-time runner-up who has never lifted the sport's most coveted trophy, continues to compete in his 60s but has not reached the Crucible stage of a World Championship since 2006.
Heartbreaking Loss in Qualifying
White will not be appearing at this year's tournament either. After being paired with world number 99 Gao Yang in the opening round of qualifying, he suffered a heartbreaking 10-9 loss despite leading the first session 5-4. The 63-year-old was left to reflect on several key moments, none more significant than in the fifth frame when he was handed what appeared to be a decent opportunity to establish a 4-1 advantage.
Pivotal Miss and Angry Reaction
However, White missed a red into the left middle pocket, allowing his Chinese opponent back to the table to capitalise. Following this crucial error, White was caught on TNT Sports cameras furiously responding to something that occurred off camera. Co-commentator Phil Yates speculated that he was put off by someone in the audience moving behind the pocket – a distraction frequently cited during critical moments in snooker.
Lead commentator Joe Johnson exclaimed: "What a miss! How important is it going to be?" before Yates replied: "I saw him signalling to someone in the crowd that maybe they've moved behind the pocket." This incident highlighted the intense pressure and fine margins that define professional snooker at the highest level.
Other Notable Qualifying Exits
White was not the only notable player to come up short in the qualifying rounds. Former world champion Ken Doherty, now ranked 100 in the world, suffered a 10-5 defeat at the hands of English amateur player Patrick Whelan. A number of other recognisable figures will enter qualifying in later rounds, including two-time World Championship runner-up Matthew Stevens, 2024 runner-up Jak Jones, and 2023 champion Luca Brecel.
The Road to the Crucible
The Crucible stage of the tournament begins with the round of 32 on April 18. The top 16 players in the world will qualify as seeds, with a further 16 players joining them after the qualifying rounds. Zhao Xintong is the defending champion and will go into the tournament as the top seed. The Chinese star defeated Mark Williams in the 2025 final after overcoming seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in the semi-finals.
Zhao came through qualifying to win in 2025, competing in Sheffield as an amateur. It was the second straight year in which a qualifier reached the final, with Jones ranked 44th in the world when he lost to Kyren Wilson in the 2024 edition. This underscores the unpredictable nature of the World Snooker Championship and the drama that unfolds even before the main event begins.
