Jets Cornerback Shows Resilience After Early Morning Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has provided a positive update on cornerback Kris Boyd, who remains hospitalised after being shot in midtown Manhattan during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Glenn confirmed he has spoken directly with the 29-year-old player and described Boyd as being "upbeat" and "in good spirits" despite the traumatic incident. The coach expressed confidence that Boyd would make a full recovery from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Coach's Relief After Concerning Incident
"That's what eases my mind, is that he's in good spirits," Glenn stated during a Wednesday press conference. "His wife and his kid, they're in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine."
The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in a location approximately halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Glenn admitted the player's condition has been on his mind "a ton" since learning of the incident, particularly given Boyd's recent family circumstances. "The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid," Glenn revealed. "And I'm thinking about his wife, I'm thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he's OK."
Ongoing Police Investigation
New York police authorities have released surveillance images of a man they're seeking in connection with the shooting. The investigation continues to determine the motive behind the attack, with authorities yet to establish whether Boyd was specifically targeted.
No other injuries were reported from the incident, and the shooter fled the scene immediately afterwards. Boyd has been listed in critical but stable condition at Bellevue Hospital, though Glenn couldn't provide a specific timeline for his release.
"Don't know just yet," the coach responded when asked about discharge plans. "But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that's what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he's talking that way."
Season of Challenges for Jets Player
Boyd hasn't featured for the Jets this season after being placed on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury requiring surgical intervention.
The Texas native joined New York as a free agent in March, signing a one-year contract worth $1.6 million. He was expected to play a significant role in the team's revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo.
Unfortunately, Boyd suffered his shoulder injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field. Despite this setback, he has maintained close involvement with the team throughout his recovery.
"He's been a part of what we're doing," Glenn affirmed. "I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He's fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he's done a really good job of helping the other guys we have."
Boyd began his NFL career with Minnesota Vikings, spending four seasons with the team after they selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 draft from the University of Texas. He later played for Arizona Cardinals in 2023 before joining Houston's practice squad later that same season.
Glenn concluded with optimism about Boyd's recovery journey: "There's a process to this, which I won't get into, but I'm happy at the fact that he's going to come out of this thing really, really well."
