Jeremy Doku has admitted he must improve his goal-scoring record if he is to be considered among the world's best wingers. The Manchester City winger, who scored a consolation goal in last season's FA Cup final defeat, has managed only four goals in 40 club appearances this campaign, with just one in his last 24 outings. 'If I score goals, this is a different conversation that we have,' he said. 'A winger needs to score.'
Doku, 22, believes getting into positions for 'easy goals and tap-ins' would make a significant difference. 'Sometimes in the game, you don't realise that you're not in that position where you should be to just score the easy goals,' he explained. The Belgian remains a key creative force, leading the Premier League for dribbles and providing 11 assists this season, but he knows his finishing must improve.
The winger often attracts two defenders, which he sees as beneficial for his team-mates. 'When I play now, there's most of the time two defenders on me, which is not a problem because that means another player is free,' he said. However, he is aware that his goal tally is below par for a player of his ambition.
Doku looks up to prolific entertainers such as Neymar, Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard. He has improved since joining City, with the side averaging 2.38 points per league game when he starts compared to 1.88 when he does not. He now hopes to win the FA Cup after back-to-back final defeats. 'I won a Carabao Cup, I won the Premier League, so I want to win the FA Cup as well,' he said.
