Jeff Stelling Returns as Hartlepool United President

Jeff Stelling's Emotional Return to Hartlepool United Role

Jeff Stelling has made a heartfelt return to his former role as honorary president of Hartlepool United, just days after confirming an extended break from his talkSPORT breakfast show. The 70-year-old broadcaster stepped down from the position in May 2025 in protest at the club's previous ownership but has now rejoined following Landon Smith's takeover in January 2026.

Takeover Sparks Reconnection with Club

Hartlepool United were taken over by American real estate developer Landon Smith at the start of the year, nearly three years after being put up for sale by former owner Raj Singh. Stelling had been a vocal critic of Singh, stating that he left supporters in an "intolerable position" when he resigned at the end of the 2024/25 season. The club's new ownership has paved the way for Stelling's return, alongside Savannah Marshall, who has become the club ambassador.

"Hartlepool United has been part of my life for as long as I can remember," Stelling said. "I've supported the club through the highs and the lows, like every Poolie. To now have the opportunity to once again formally represent Pools is something I'm incredibly proud of."

Positive Conversations with New Owner

Stelling expressed confidence in Smith's approach, highlighting positive discussions that influenced his decision to return. "I've had positive conversations with Landon, and I've been impressed by his approach. He is taking the time to listen and understand the club, and he is focused on doing things properly," he explained. "There is no rush to make promises, just a clear commitment to building in the right way."

He added, "I would not have returned in any capacity if I did not believe in what is being done. If I can play even a small part in helping restore Pools, I will give it everything."

Background in Broadcasting and Passion for Hartlepool

Jeff Stelling is best known for his 29-year tenure as presenter of Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports, where his passion for Hartlepool United was a recurring feature. After leaving Sky Sports, he joined talkSPORT in 2023, fronting the breakfast show with Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil. His recent announcement of a break from radio duties coincides with this return to Hartlepool.

Landon Smith, co-founder of the Minnesota-based real estate company Tailwind Group, acknowledged Stelling's significance to the club. "Over the past two months, I've spent a lot of time listening and meeting people connected to Hartlepool United, and it's become clear just how important Jeff and Savannah are to this club and this town," Smith said.

"When you meet people of their stature, sometimes reputation can outweigh reality. With Jeff and Savannah, it was the opposite. I was hugely impressed. Their passion for Pools is genuine, their connection to the town is authentic and both can contribute incredible value to this club's journey."

This development marks a significant moment for Hartlepool United, as they aim to rebuild under new ownership with the support of iconic figures like Stelling and Marshall.
