Matthias Jaissle has told his wounded Newcastle United players to use the disappointment of their Carabao Cup exit as motivation for tonight's Premier League rematch against Everton at St James' Park.
Newcastle lost 3-1 to the Toffees at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, a result that ended their hopes of returning to a major final. Jaissle had spoken openly about chasing the dream of repeating Newcastle's 2025 victory against Liverpool in this season's competition. Instead, Everton advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face League Two side Fleetwood Town.
Turning frustration into motivation
A win for Newcastle against Everton tonight would lift them to seventh place in the Premier League table, a point behind Liverpool and two off Chelsea in fourth. Jaissle said his team should need no extra motivation from him.
"The frustration needs to be turned into motivation now," Jaissle said. "We are looking to get revenge on Monday night. We have plenty from Thursday night that we can build on back at home tonight."
Newcastle created 28 goal attempts against Everton but managed only a consolation strike from Dan Burn. The match ended with players from both sides clashing, as Joelinton and Burn confronted Jordan Pickford and James Tarkowski.
Efficiency and costly errors
Jaissle acknowledged that the scoreline did not reflect the performance but stressed the importance of results. "The result did not reflect the match, but in football it is about getting the right result, we couldn't achieve that," he said.
"The performance in many aspects was good, but when it comes to being efficient, we didn't have it. Their goals came from gifts for us. It wasn't acceptable. We had a good match - that sounds a bit strange after a 3-1 defeat, but what we can say, is we were unhappy when we lost the ball, critical ball losses. We invited the opposition to score too easily. And on that level you will get punished. We had opportunities to score, many shots, but we made it too simple for them."
Push for Europe and fan support
With Newcastle facing a run of Premier League games between now and January, Jaissle's squad have the chance to push for a top-six or top-seven finish and a return to European competition after missing out last season. Jaissle is confident it can be done and is keen to make amends to supporters, thousands of whom left the stadium before the end on Thursday night.
"We need to improve that in the upcoming weeks, that has been the story so far this season. It's not possible to lose the ball the way we did," the former Red Bull Salzburg boss said. "We didn't deliver for 8,000 fans who made a big journey to support us so the frustration is even bigger. We want to win every match. We knew the importance of this competition. It was frustrating to have that result."
Newcastle will run late checks on Matias Fernandez-Pardo after illness last week, while William Osula (ankle) and Lewis Miley (glutes) are doubts for the game in front of a sold-out St James' Park.
