Iraq's Coach Urges FIFA to Postpone World Cup Playoff Amid Regional Conflict
Iraq Coach Urges FIFA to Delay World Cup Playoff Due to War

Iraq's national football team manager Graham Arnold has made an urgent appeal to FIFA, requesting a postponement of his team's upcoming World Cup playoff match due to severe disruptions caused by escalating regional warfare. The crucial intercontinental qualifier is currently scheduled for March 31 in Monterrey, Mexico, but Arnold argues the team cannot properly prepare or assemble under current conditions.

Logistical Nightmare for Iraqi Squad

The Iraqi squad faces major logistical challenges ahead of their winner-takes-all playoff against either Suriname or Bolivia. With Iraqi airspace closed until April 1 due to the intensifying conflict between Iran and the United States, Arnold's predominantly domestic-based squad cannot fully gather for training or travel preparations.

Visa and Travel Complications

Players have been unable to secure necessary visas for the Mexico tournament due to widespread foreign embassy closures throughout the region. Coach Arnold himself remains stranded in the United Arab Emirates, unable to coordinate with his full team or oversee proper preparations.

"Please help us with this game because right now we are struggling to get our players out of the country of Iraq," Arnold told the Australian Associated Press. The former Australian national team coach emphasized that fielding a team composed solely of overseas-based players would not represent Iraq's best possible squad.

Training Camp Postponed and Strategic Proposal

The ongoing regional turmoil has already forced the cancellation of a planned training camp in Houston, Texas. Arnold has proposed a strategic delay to the playoff schedule, suggesting FIFA allow Suriname and Bolivia to play their preliminary match this month while deferring the final playoff until just one week before the World Cup begins.

"It wouldn't be our best team and we need our best team available for the country's biggest game in 40 years," Arnold explained regarding the importance of having all domestic players available.

Arnold's Rationale for Delay

Arnold believes a postponement would serve multiple purposes: "In my opinion, if FIFA were to delay the game it gives us time to prepare properly. In my opinion, it also gives FIFA more time to decide what Iran is going to do."

The coach further noted that if Iran withdraws from the tournament due to the conflict, Iraq would automatically qualify for the World Cup, and the United Arab Emirates - whom Iraq defeated in earlier qualifying rounds - could then prepare to face either Bolivia or Suriname instead.

Federation Working Against Time

Iraqi Football Federation president Adnan Dirjal is reportedly working around the clock to coordinate plans amid the challenging circumstances. Arnold emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that quick decision-making from FIFA is essential to realizing Iraq's World Cup aspirations.

The playoff represents Iraq's most significant football match in four decades, with the nation hoping to secure a spot in international football's premier tournament despite the geopolitical challenges disrupting their preparations.
