Liverpool are set to face LASK in the Champions League on Wednesday, but the fitness of three key players remains uncertain. Andoni Iraola was without Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo for the heavy 3-0 defeat by Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, as the Reds made a losing return to Premier League action.
Lewis Koumas started up top for the Reds, while Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz operated off the flanks, with Hugo Ekitike also sidelined with his pre-existing Achilles issue. Szoboszlai was a surprise exclusion from the matchday squad over the weekend, but it was revealed that the Hungarian had suffered a tight hamstring during the international break. Gakpo and Isak were out with ankle and thigh problems respectively.
Iraola's cryptic update
Now, the Reds are looking to follow up their 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in their opening league phase encounter with a victory in Austria, but the availability of the trio remains unclear.
“They are not bad but it's difficult to tell right now [when they will be back],” the Spaniard said on Tuesday. “We are taking it day to day. Really the three of them, I don't know if it's going to be Brentford or Villarreal.”
What's next for the Reds
As such, the trio will not travel to LASK, but they could make the trip to the capital at the weekend, when the Reds visit the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford. After that, they host Villarreal in the Champions League before two quick-fire home games against Brighton and Hove Albion and then Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
