Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté has revealed that he is on the verge of agreeing a new contract with the club, signalling his intention to extend his successful five-year tenure at Anfield. The France international's current deal is set to expire this summer, but after prolonged negotiations spanning over twelve months, a resolution appears imminent.

Speaking in the aftermath of Liverpool's dramatic late victory in the Merseyside derby, Konaté expressed optimism about his future with the Reds. "My future? There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement," the defender stated. He emphasised that this outcome aligns with his personal desires, adding, "There is a big chance I'm here next season. This is what I always wanted."
Negotiation Process and Club Strategy
Konaté addressed concerns over the protracted nature of the contract discussions, drawing parallels with previous negotiations involving teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. "This is negotiation," he explained. "With Virgil and Mo last season it was exactly the same. I think they signed the contract in April and this is maybe how the club want it." He indicated that final details would be handled by Liverpool's sporting director, Richard Hughes, once everything is formalised.

The 26-year-old defender has faced a tumultuous season both on and off the pitch. In January, he experienced the personal tragedy of losing his father, yet he returned early from compassionate leave to bolster Liverpool's defence during a shortage, notably scoring his first Premier League goal at Anfield in a 4-1 win against Newcastle. Reflecting on these hardships, Konaté said, "It was a tough year because many things happened. I think if everyone knew exactly what happened to me they could understand many things, which kind of sacrifices I've done for this club."

Despite the ongoing contract situation, Konaté remains focused on Liverpool's immediate sporting ambitions. "Right now I am focused on the end of the season and making sure we are qualified for the Champions League next season," he affirmed. He acknowledged that this period will form a significant chapter in his career narrative, stating, "After, we take the time to talk about this season because it's going to be a big part of my story. It's sad in one part, but it's very nice for my story when I explain that to my future kids and the people who support this club."
