Alexander Isak praised Newcastle United's resilience after his late header secured a 1-0 victory over Fulham at St. James' Park. The Swedish striker netted his third Premier League goal of the season in the 89th minute, heading home after Callum Wilson nodded Sean Longstaff's cross across the face of goal.
The win was not without drama, as Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic missed a penalty earlier in the match. The Serbian forward slipped during his run-up, striking the ball onto his standing foot, allowing Newcastle to escape unscathed.
Isak, who came off the substitutes' bench, expressed his delight at making an impact. 'When I was coming on, I was just thinking about how I could give the team more energy, to keep the momentum and to keep on attacking,' he told NUFC TV. 'I had a feeling the chance would arrive and I was in the right place at the right time.'
The 23-year-old, who missed over five months with a thigh injury, acknowledged the importance of reconnecting with the fans. 'Those late goals, late winners, are always the best goals and just to be able to score that one at home in front of our incredible fans, it was a special feeling.'
Isak credited the team's collective mentality for their success. 'I think the team has shown in many games that our mentality is right – we always stick together and fight until the end. Every win we can take is good, it'll keep giving us confidence.'
