Former Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund was left in disbelief after discovering his strike against Wales was being ruled as an own goal. The forward was in action for Denmark in their Nations League clash against Wales on Sunday evening, where he helped his country claim a 2-0 victory.
Hojlund's Move and United Record
Hojlund left United in the summer of 2025 to complete a loan move to Napoli, which became permanent earlier this year for a fee worth £43.2million. The striker's time at Old Trafford saw him score 26 goals across 95 appearances, having joined United from Atalanta in the summer of 2023.
Denmark thought they had opened the scoring in the first half in Copenhagen with a strike from Gustav Isaksen, only for the effort to be ruled out for an offside in the build-up following a VAR check. The home side then took the lead in the second half after a free-kick from Mikkel Damsgaard took a deflection and flew past Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Isaksen then found the back of the net a second time near the hour mark, with this effort not being disallowed, and seeing Denmark go on to secure a 2-0 win over Wales on home soil.
Hojlund wheeled away to celebrate his goal, which opened the scoring, but replays showed there was a deflection off Ben Davies' leg, which saw the effort be ruled as an own goal. This was put to the former United striker in a post-match interview with TV2, who was in disbelief that the effort would not go down as his goal.

"Are you serious? I promise and swear on my mother's grave that I will have it touched," Hojlund said, in an interview translated from Danish. "So that has to change." "I think I'm touching it, and then we have to go in and get it redone. Because yes, I'm touching it," Hojlund added, while laughing.
The next opportunity for Hojlund to score for his country will be when Denmark face Portugal on Thursday in the Nations League, which could see Bruno Fernandes return from injury. Fernandes missed Portugal's win over Norway on Sunday, but could return to full fitness in time to feature for his country in their next match against Denmark later this week.
