Wilfried Nancy's tenure as Celtic manager has reached a critical point after a 3-1 defeat to Rangers, leaving the team in turmoil. The former Columbus Crew boss, appointed amid much fanfare, has now lost six of his eight matches in charge, conceding 18 goals in the process. His position is widely considered untenable, with calls for the club to turn to Martin O'Neill, who previously led Celtic to seven wins in eight games as caretaker.
Nancy used his Friday press conference to plead for time and context, criticizing the media for highlighting his poor record. However, by Saturday afternoon, he was walking down the tunnel as a beaten man. The Celtic board, who faced sustained abuse during the defeat, are under pressure to explain their decision to appoint Nancy, a move described as a reckless punt given his lack of experience at a club of Celtic's stature.
The match itself saw Celtic take the lead through a stunning goal from Yang Hyun-jun, who cut inside and fired into the roof of the net. Johnny Kenny and Auston Trusty missed chances to extend the lead before half-time. However, Rangers manager Danny Röhl made tactical adjustments at the break, and Celtic crumbled under pressure. Youssef Chermiti equalized after shrugging off Trusty, then put Rangers ahead by dispossessing Anthony Ralston before racing through on goal. Mikey Moore sealed the win with a clinical finish from Djeidi Gassama's pass.
Celtic midfielder Luke McCowan admitted the team could not handle Rangers' shape change, while captain Callum McGregor's absence from media duties has been noted as a subtle indictment of Nancy's leadership. Rangers, who endured a difficult spell under Russell Martin earlier this season, now find themselves level on points with Celtic and are serious title contenders.
