Erling Haaland Accepts Full Responsibility for Scoring Struggles
Manchester City's prolific striker Erling Haaland has openly admitted there is "no excuse" for his recent goal drought, despite shouldering an immense workload this season. The Norwegian forward broke his dry spell by converting the decisive penalty in City's 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, marking only his third goal in the last thirteen appearances.
A Striking Contrast in Form
Haaland's current struggles present a stark contrast to his electrifying start with Manchester City. Earlier in the campaign, he netted an astonishing 25 goals in his first 23 games, establishing himself as one of the most feared attackers in world football. However, since the turn of the year, his output has significantly diminished, with his only two Premier League strikes both coming from the penalty spot.
The physical demands on the 25-year-old have been substantial, having already made 41 appearances for both club and country this season. Yet, Haaland firmly rejected the notion that fatigue could justify his dip in form.
Haaland's Candid Self-Assessment
"I haven't scored enough goals since the start of this year and I know that I need to improve," Haaland stated with characteristic honesty. "I know I need to be more sharp, better at all of this and this is something that I have to work on. I have to keep going because this is what everyone deserves and expects."
He elaborated further on his mindset, dismissing any potential alibis for his performance. "I don't want to speak about why I haven't performed. I don't think there's any excuse. Fatigue is a lot in the head. It's a lot of games. Look at the schedule, it's not easy, and for me, it's about staying fit, don't get injured. That's the most important thing. And try to be ready to help the team."
A Historic Victory at Anfield
Sunday's match-winning penalty held extra significance for Haaland, as it was his first ever goal for Manchester City at Anfield. The victory itself was a rare achievement for the Citizens, being only their second away win against Liverpool since 2003.
"I never won here before, so it's amazing to come here and be able to win for the first time," Haaland reflected, clearly savouring the moment. "It’s not easy, because of the history that City and Liverpool have had for the last decade. There’s also history behind it also. So of course it's a good feeling. Look at the emotions with the fans in the end, it was amazing."
Title Race Implications
The crucial three points secured at Anfield allowed Manchester City to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to just six points. However, Haaland was quick to downplay any suggestion that the victory served as a direct message to Mikel Arteta's title-chasing side.
"No, not really," he responded when asked if the win sent a statement to Arsenal. "But it sends a good statement to our fans." The striker's focus remains squarely on personal improvement and contributing to his team's success, as he seeks to rediscover the devastating form that made him an instant sensation in English football.
