Gyokeres Lauds Arsenal's Perfect Response After Wolves Setback in Spurs Thrashing
Viktor Gyokeres has hailed Arsenal's emphatic 4-1 derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur as the perfect response to silence critics following a disappointing draw at Wolves earlier in the week. The Swedish striker, along with teammate Eberechi Eze, scored twice to secure a commanding triumph at the Emirates Stadium, propelling the Gunners five points clear at the Premier League summit.
Silencing Doubters After Wolves Stumble
Just four days prior, Arsenal were rocked by a 2-2 draw against bottom-of-the-table Wolves at Molineux, a result that raised questions about their title mentality. However, their dominant performance against fierce rivals Tottenham went a long way in dispelling those doubts. Gyokeres, who extended his league tally to 10 goals for the season, emphasised the importance of resilience.
"It's always going to be difficult when you get a result like we had at Wolves, but it's how you handle that, and how you respond to it," Gyokeres stated. "Today we showed that in a good way. To get this result and this performance, it was the perfect way to respond. So, it's a good sign. We have to keep showing it in the next game and the game after that. There's a lot of games to go. But if we perform like this, it's going to be good, for sure."
Team Meeting Fuels Derby Success
Following the Wolves match, where Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead, Mikel Arteta's title-chasing squad held a candid team meeting. Speaking ahead of the north London derby, Declan Rice revealed that players spoke to each other in a firm and honest manner. Gyokeres reflected on the importance of this open dialogue within the group.
"It's important sometimes just to say what you feel and to let it all out in the group," he explained. "Most of us spoke. Everyone can recognise how different people feel in the moment and you get a better understanding of the feeling. When you speak in the group openly like that, you come closer together and it's very important to do that sometimes. If you're not honest, I think it's hard to improve. It was a good chat, we certainly enjoyed today, and now we're going to prepare for a big game against Chelsea next weekend."
Arteta's Focus Amid Rival Relaxation
With Arsenal avoiding the Champions League play-offs, they will not have a midweek fixture for the first time in over two months, offering a rare break in their hectic schedule. Meanwhile, title rivals Manchester City, who face Leeds at Elland Road next weekend, are also on a break. City manager Pep Guardiola indicated he would allow his players to enjoy some cocktails in the coming days.
In response to Guardiola's plans, Arteta quipped with a smile: "Cocktails? I don't drink cocktails. So, no, we will do our own thing." This highlights Arsenal's focused approach as they aim to maintain their lead at the top of the table, with crucial matches ahead, including a showdown against Chelsea.
