Guardiola Urges City Stars to Enjoy Daiquiris After Crucial Newcastle Victory
Guardiola Tells Players to Have Daiquiris After Newcastle Win

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has instructed his players to enjoy "a lot of daiquiris" during their three-day break following a crucial 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The win, secured by a brace from midfielder Nico O'Reilly, has narrowed Arsenal's lead at the top of the table to just two points, intensifying the title race as the season enters its final stages.

Guardiola Hails 'Massive' Triumph in Title Pursuit

Guardiola described the hard-fought triumph as "massive" for City's championship aspirations, emphasising the significance of overcoming a resilient Newcastle side. "It was massive. Newcastle are an incredible team," the City boss stated. "That game today is what we are going to face in the next 11. Every game will be like that, a battle."

Focus on Leeds, Not the Title Race

Despite the narrowing gap with Arsenal, Guardiola urged his squad to concentrate solely on their upcoming fixture against Leeds United next Saturday, rather than getting distracted by the broader title picture. He warned against complacency, noting that focusing on rivals' results could lead to unexpected setbacks.

"Now we have three days off. I say to them 'what you have to do is take a lot of caipirinhas and daiquiris in these next three days, enjoy life', and then we make proper sessions and go to Leeds," Guardiola explained. "That is the proper way. If we say 'we win this, then Arsenal do this or Aston Villa'... (you get a) slap in the face and what you thought (would happen), the opposite happens."

O'Reilly's Brace Secures Vital Points

Nico O'Reilly's double, which came either side of a deflected equaliser from Newcastle's Lewis Hall, rewarded City for a strong first-half performance. However, Newcastle – returning from a midweek Europa Conference League game in Azerbaijan – proved a tougher opponent after the interval, pressing late on to create an anxious finish.

Guardiola praised the home crowd for their role in securing the three points, describing the atmosphere as the best of the season. "The vibe and the connection with our fans today was the best of the season," he said. "We have five (home) games left in the Premier League and we need that vibe."

Howe Praises Newcastle's Effort Despite Defeat

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed satisfaction with his team's display, highlighting their physical effort amid a demanding schedule. "It was a good effort from the lads physically. It has been a really tough run of fixtures for us," Howe said. "Every time we enter the pitch I want the players to empty, to give everything. I can't ask for any more."

Howe acknowledged defensive errors for City's two goals but remained positive about the performance overall. "For their two goals I don't think we defended well enough and we made individual errors but, considering everything we have put into the last few weeks, that was a good performance."

Title Race Heats Up with Ten Games Remaining

With ten games left in the Premier League season, Guardiola emphasised the unpredictability of the title race, urging his team to maintain focus and resilience. "I know how difficult it will be. Just win the next game, keep going, never give up. Ten games is a lot in the Premier League. Many things are going to happen," he concluded.

The victory was buoyed by Arsenal's unexpected draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, setting the stage for a thrilling climax to the campaign as City continue their pursuit of a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
