Pep Guardiola Remains Uninformed About Bernardo Silva's Manchester City Future
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his frustration and uncertainty regarding the future of club captain Bernardo Silva, whose contract is set to expire this summer. Despite widespread speculation that Silva will depart after nine illustrious years at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola claims he has not received any official confirmation from the player himself.
Assistant Manager's Comments Fuel Exit Rumours
Assistant manager Pep Lijnders recently hinted at Silva's impending departure, stating, "Every good story comes to an end and I hope he enjoys the last months – because there is only six weeks – and has a good farewell." However, neither the club nor Silva has made an official announcement, leaving Guardiola in a state of confusion about the situation.
Guardiola revealed his disappointment, saying, "I'm so grumpy with Bernardo because a month ago I said, 'If you take a decision I have to be the first to know' and he didn't say anything to me yet. I said, jokingly, 'Tell me, I deserve it' but he didn't tell me so I don't know what's going on!"
Silva's Stellar Career at Manchester City
Since joining from Monaco in 2017, Bernardo Silva has made an impressive 450 appearances for Manchester City. During his tenure, he has been instrumental in securing numerous trophies, including:
- Six Premier League titles
- The Champions League
- The Club World Cup
- Two FA Cups
- Five Carabao Cups
Following a challenging 2024-25 season, Guardiola appointed Silva as captain, a decision he described as "the best decision I made this season." He praised Silva's leadership qualities, noting, "The team comes first. Sometimes politicians say something like that – the country comes first but then after it never comes first – but with Bernardo it is what it is."
Guardiola's High Praise for Silva's Contributions
Guardiola emphasised Silva's reliability and versatility, highlighting his consistent performance over nearly a decade. "He is really good in all departments. He plays a lot of games. Nine years we have been together and no injuries and never out. He can play in different positions, he is so smart and reads every moment what the action and game requires," Guardiola remarked.
Beyond statistics like goals and assists, Guardiola values Silva's resilience in difficult situations. "I judge players when everything is difficult and he always steps up and says he is here to help. He has been an incredible signing for us, incredible," he added.
Despite his desire for Silva to remain at the club, Guardiola acknowledged the uncertainty, stating, "I love this club amazingly and I would love if he could stay and finish his career here but I do not know. He will decide what he will decide and announce to the club and the media and the fans. It is his decision."
As Manchester City prepares for their upcoming Premier League match against Chelsea, the focus remains on Silva's future, with fans and management alike awaiting clarity on whether this chapter will indeed come to a close.
