Guardiola Dismisses Title Race Focus, Eyes Newcastle Clash Amid City's Resurgence
Guardiola Ignores Title Race, Focuses on Newcastle Amid City Form

Pep Guardiola has emphatically dismissed any preoccupation with the Premier League title race, declaring he "could not care less" about the current standings as Manchester City prepare for their crucial home clash against Newcastle United this Saturday.

City's Title Charge Gains Momentum

Manchester City find themselves just five points behind league leaders Arsenal, with the added advantage of a game in hand. This favourable position emerged after Arsenal squandered a lead to draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, tightening the title race considerably.

If City triumph in all their remaining fixtures, including a pivotal encounter with Arsenal scheduled for April, they will secure the championship once more. However, Guardiola remains steadfastly focused on the immediate challenge.

Guardiola's Singular Focus

When questioned about whether City's prospects have improved in recent months, the Catalan manager provided a characteristically direct response. "I don't know what's going to happen these next 12 games," Guardiola stated. "I didn't speak one second about that with my players. Yesterday, the day before, just Newcastle, Newcastle and Newcastle."

He elaborated further, underscoring his indifference to the league table at this stage. "I didn't talk about the table, I didn't talk about the position. I could not care less. You tell me this question with two games left, three games left, I will have your answer. It's 12 games left, it's an eternity. Many things is going to happen is the only truth I have."

Experience Questioned and Squad Updates

Guardiola also refuted suggestions that his team's extensive experience in title run-ins would provide a decisive edge. "Seventy per cent of the players are new so they don't have experience to live these kind of situations," he remarked, highlighting the evolving composition of his squad.

The team benefited from a rare midweek break, which Guardiola acknowledged was much needed after exhaustion set in ahead of last weekend's FA Cup match against Salford City. "The important thing is the players are revitalised," he noted. "We've had a lot of months with few days off. I don't have to run one metre so for me it's not a problem, after one or two days I sleep well, it's enough. The players have trained good the last two days."

On the injury front, there is positive news as star striker Erling Haaland is poised to return to the squad. Winger Savinho is also fit again after recovering from a thigh injury sustained in early January. However, fellow winger Jeremy Doku continues to be sidelined.

Semenyo's Impact and Guardiola on Racism

One of City's standout performers in recent weeks has been forward Antoine Semenyo, who joined from Bournemouth. Guardiola expressed his delight with the player's seamless integration and versatility. "It's not just scoring a lot of goals in people that play up front. The versatility, he can play in all three positions, we knew it, and in Bournemouth they are exceptional in the rhythm and defensively so he has it in his DNA. The impact has been really good."

Guardiola also addressed the forward's upcoming Champions League challenges. "He's never played in the Champions League before and it's a good test for him how he'll react, but I'm pretty sure, with his mentality, he will handle that quite well."

In a separate matter, Guardiola was asked about the disturbing incident of alleged racial abuse directed at Vinicius Junior during the Champions League match between Benfica and Real Madrid. He emphasised the ongoing struggle against racism. "There's a lot of work to do. Racism is everywhere. Pay a lot to the teachers. The teachers and the doctors have to be the most important people in society by far, not the managers."
