Pep Guardiola to Lead Manchester City in Carabao Cup Final Despite Impending Touchline Ban
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will be present on the touchline for the upcoming Carabao Cup final against Arsenal, despite receiving a two-game suspension due to his sixth yellow card of the campaign. The incident occurred during City's 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday evening.
Guardiola's Touchline Outburst Leads to Suspension
Guardiola lost his composure after protesting a challenge by Newcastle's Kieran Trippier on City forward Jeremy Doku. The Spaniard squared up to fourth official Lewis Smith, angrily removed his coat, and had to be restrained when attempting to confront match officials at full-time. This marks the sixth caution for Guardiola this season, triggering an automatic two-match touchline ban under regulations introduced for the current campaign.
The suspension, however, only applies to FA Cup and Premier League matches, excluding European competitions and domestic cup finals. Consequently, Guardiola will be absent from the dugout for City's next Premier League fixture against West Ham United and their FA Cup quarter-final clash scheduled for the weekend of April 4-5, but will be permitted to coach from the touchline in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on March 22.
Guardiola Defends Actions and Comments on Suspension
When questioned about his animated reaction, Guardiola stated, 'When Jeremy Doku dribbles Trippier and goes alone to the box and is being pulled from behind, I’m not asking for a yellow card but it’s a foul. I will defend my team.' He further remarked, 'I will tell you something – we have all the records in this country, all of them, despite everything. We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it.'
Guardiola sarcastically joked about his impending ban, saying, 'Two-game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games. Oh my God. Oh my God. There are things after 10 years I cannot understand. Review the action. Of course I’m going to defend Doku and all my teams. They continue to do it.'
Previous Suspension and Future Disciplinary Risks
This is not the first time Guardiola has faced touchline restrictions this season. He was previously forced to watch from the stands during City's 10-1 FA Cup third-round victory over Exeter City in January after accumulating three yellow cards. Assistant coach Kolo Touré also received a booking during the match at St James' Park.
Looking ahead, if Guardiola accrues nine yellow cards this season, he will incur a three-match touchline ban, while 12 cautions would result in an FA misconduct charge. The draw for the FA Cup quarter-finals will take place on Monday evening, determining City's opponents for the match Guardiola will miss due to suspension.
