Grand National Champion Noble Yeats Dies at Age 11 Following Colic Battle
Grand National winner Noble Yeats has died at the age of 11, four years after his historic victory at Aintree. The champion horse passed away after suffering from colic, a severe gastrointestinal condition that proved fatal despite overnight veterinary treatment.
Tributes Pour In for Aintree Hero
Noble Yeats was enjoying his retirement at his owner's stud farm in Oxfordshire when the health crisis emerged on Wednesday. Veterinary professionals worked through the night attempting to save the horse, but his condition deteriorated, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize him on Thursday.
Owner Robert Waley-Cohen shared heartfelt memories of the horse, stating: "He looked very uncomfortable on Wednesday so the vet came out and everybody was up all night treating him and hoping he would pull through, but unfortunately he went the other way. It was a grim moment."
A Retirement Among Champions
During his retirement, Noble Yeats lived alongside other racing legends including Long Run, the Gold Cup winner, and Oscar Time, the 2011 Grand National runner-up. Waley-Cohen described the horse's post-racing life as idyllic, spending peaceful days in the field with his equine companions.
The owner reflected on the unforgettable 2022 Grand National victory: "He was enormous fun at the National and afterwards. The memories of the National are unbelievable – you could not have a better day. It's the dream of a lifetime to win the National, and to win it with your son made it even more special."
A Historic Final Ride
The 2022 Grand National victory carried additional significance as it marked the final competitive ride for jockey Sam Waley-Cohen, Robert's son, who had announced his retirement just days before the race. This father-son triumph created a poignant chapter in racing history that will be remembered for generations.
Noble Yeats' passing represents a significant loss to the racing community, with tributes flooding in from fans, trainers, and fellow owners who remember the horse's remarkable achievement at Aintree. The racing world mourns a true champion whose legacy will endure through the memories of his spectacular Grand National victory.
