Josh Cavallo has alleged that homophobia within Adelaide United led to his departure from the A-League club, claiming his playing opportunities were blocked because of his sexuality. The 26-year-old, who came out as gay in 2021, left the Reds last year and now plays non-league football for Stamford AFC in England.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Cavallo said decisions by people in power limited his chances despite his talent. 'Leaving the club had nothing to do with football,' he wrote. 'It became clear that I wasn’t allowed on the pitch because of politics.' He added that internal homophobia kept him on the bench and affected his wellbeing.
Adelaide United responded with a statement on Tuesday, rejecting the allegations and saying they were 'extremely disappointed' by the claims. The club insisted all team selections were made on footballing grounds and reiterated its commitment to inclusion, pointing to its upcoming pride cup match.
Cavallo’s playing time diminished after he ruptured his Achilles tendon and suffered a quad injury. He appeared on the bench during the 2024-25 season but did not play any A-League minutes. He also claimed to have seen a group chat mocking a picture of him and his partner.
The former Australian under-20 international said his move to the UK provided a 'fresh start' that allowed him to regain his love for the sport. Despite the turmoil, he expressed continued affection for Adelaide, the city where he 'found my wings'.
