A dramatic derby in the Spanish second division erupted into chaos on Sunday after Real Zaragoza goalkeeper Esteban Andrada punched an opponent following his dismissal. The Argentine shot-stopper received a second yellow card for pushing a Huesca player during stoppage time of a crucial relegation six-pointer. However, he then sprinted towards Huesca captain Jorge Pulido and struck him in the face, igniting a mass confrontation.
Mass brawl ensues
The incident triggered an all-out brawl involving multiple players. Huesca goalkeeper Dani Jimenez raced from his box to deliver a superman punch to Andrada, while Zaragoza's Dani Tasende was also sent off. The melee resulted in three red cards in total, overshadowing the match itself.
Club condemns actions
Real Zaragoza swiftly condemned Andrada's behaviour, stating they would take appropriate disciplinary measures. 'We witnessed scenes unbecoming of this sport and which should never have occurred,' the club said in a statement. 'These events do not represent the values of Real Zaragoza or its fans, who throughout history have been characterized by sportsmanship, courage, and respect for the opponent.'
The club emphasised their role as role models, particularly for children, and expressed regret that such images were broadcast.
Andrada apologises
Andrada, 35, took responsibility after the match, admitting he 'lost focus' in the heat of the moment. 'The truth is I'm very, very sorry for what happened,' he said. 'It's not a good image for the club, for the fans, and especially not for a professional like myself. I also want to apologise to Jorge Pulido because we are colleagues, and honestly, it was my fault.'
The former Argentina international, who has only one previous red card in his career, said he would accept whatever punishment the league imposes.
Relegation battle intensifies
Huesca manager Jose Luis described the incident as 'unjustifiable' and a 'complete loss of control', while Zaragoza boss David Navarro apologised, stating 'there are lines we can't cross.'
Andrada is on loan at Zaragoza from Monterrey and may never play for the club again, with a return to Mexico scheduled at the end of the season. Zaragoza now face a serious relegation threat after rivals Huesca won the Aragonese derby 1-0, leapfrogging them in the table. Both teams remain in the relegation zone: Huesca are 19th, two points from safety, while Zaragoza sit 21st, three points adrift with five games remaining.
