Crystal Palace Boss Glasner Puzzled by Fan Boos After Larnaca Draw
Glasner Questions Crystal Palace Fan Boos After Larnaca Draw

Crystal Palace Manager Glasner Baffled by Fan Reaction After European Stalemate

Oliver Glasner has openly questioned the motives behind a section of Crystal Palace supporters who were heard booing following a goalless draw with AEK Larnaca in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League last-16 tie. The match, played at Selhurst Park on Thursday evening, left the Eagles with everything to play for in next week's decisive second leg in Cyprus.

Mixed Reception for Returning Striker Mateta

Jean-Philippe Mateta made his return to Glasner's squad for the first time since his proposed transfer to AC Milan collapsed in January. The move fell through after the French international failed a medical due to a knee issue, a saga that had left some Palace fans feeling frustrated. However, upon his introduction as a late second-half substitute, Mateta received a reception that was largely warm, albeit mixed in parts.

Crystal Palace created several opportunities to break the deadlock against the same Larnaca side that had previously stunned them with a 1-0 victory at Selhurst Park during the league phase. Despite their dominance, the Eagles were unable to find the back of the net, setting up a tense return fixture.

Glasner Speculates on Reasons for Discontent

In his post-match comments, Glasner admitted he was unsure about the source of the boos. "I didn't hear anything, and maybe they booed the referee because I think in the Premier League we're used to not so many fouls, and today almost every contact was a foul, (so maybe) the crowd was not really pleased with the referee's performance," the Austrian manager suggested.

He continued, "So I don't know. Was it more him, or was it JP, or was it the result? But at the end I've seen us giving 100 per cent effort, creating enough, being very dominant. Just the most important part we missed, and that was scoring a goal."

Manager Remains Unfrustrated Despite Missed Chances

Glasner insisted he was "not frustrated" by the outcome, attributing the draw to his team's inability to convert chances and a couple of crucial saves by Larnaca goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic. He emphasised the challenges of European competition, stating, "It's never easy (in Europe), and we have to respect all the opposition. They are such an experienced team and we could see it. When you are experienced, you read, you anticipate very well and this is what they're doing."

The manager concluded by pinpointing the key issue: "We just weren't accurate or clinical enough." With the tie finely balanced, Crystal Palace now face a must-win scenario in the second leg to advance in the Conference League.
