Steven Gerrard has tipped Dominik Szoboszlai as a future Liverpool captain, suggesting the Hungarian midfielder has the mentality and consistency to succeed Virgil van Dijk. Speaking after Liverpool's 4-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray, Gerrard praised Szoboszlai's performance, which included the opening goal.
Szoboszlai, 25, has been Liverpool's most consistent player this season, prompting Mohamed Salah to call him one of the world's best. Gerrard, a Liverpool legend, urged manager Arne Slot to keep Szoboszlai in midfield for the remainder of the campaign, having seen him deployed at right-back at times.
“I like his mentality. He's evolved and grown a lot since becoming a Liverpool player,” Gerrard told TNT Sports. “There's a potential captain in there. The way he's playing, his consistency, his mentality—you can hear it in his voice. He's straight on to the next game.”
Gerrard added that Szoboszlai, who could have scored a hat-trick against Galatasaray, should be allowed to flourish in his natural position. “Keep him in his proper position. Let him flourish,” he said.
