Jürgen Klopp has reached an agreement on the key points to become the next Germany head coach, the German football association (DFB) has announced. The 59-year-old is expected to sign a contract until 2030, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann.
The DFB confirmed that president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held initial talks with Klopp in New York. An agreement was reached on the main terms, with further discussions scheduled for next week. The deal is subject to approval from Klopp's current employer, Red Bull.
Nagelsmann stepped down on 3 July after Germany were eliminated from the World Cup in the last 32 by Paraguay. Despite earlier stating he was not someone who runs away, his contract until 2028 was terminated by mutual consent.
Klopp has been out of management since leaving Liverpool in 2024, having won the Premier League and Champions League. He currently serves as Red Bull's head of global soccer and has worked as a pundit during the World Cup.
Klopp attracted attention for suggesting Deniz Undav should start over Jamal Musiala, and for a subsequent remark that Nagelsmann was still picking the team 'for now'. He later apologised, calling himself an idiot and insisting he meant no disruption.
