Gary Neville found himself in an awkward on-air moment during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football broadcast of the new season. Speaking ahead of Leeds United’s clash with Everton at Elland Road, the former Manchester United defender was unaware the show had returned from an advertisement break.
As the camera panned to Leeds fans, Neville was caught on a hot mic saying: “They are the one group of fans I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near.” Presenter David Jones quickly grabbed Neville’s arm, and the former England international laughed, asking: “Did you hear that?” He then repeated the controversial line.
Jones apologised, adding: “I don’t think they want you anywhere near them!” Neville has previously stated he would never play for Leeds, describing the rivalry as “just too much” despite acknowledging the club’s passionate atmosphere.
On the pitch, Leeds secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a late penalty from substitute Lukas Nmecha, after James Tarkowski was judged to have handled the ball. The spot-kick marked a triumphant return to the top flight for the Yorkshire side.
