Gary Neville Accuses Chelsea Stars of 'Stitching Up' Sacked Manager Liam Rosenior

Football pundit Gary Neville has delivered a brutal assessment of Chelsea's recent turmoil, directly blaming players Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez for "stitching up" manager Liam Rosenior before his dismissal on Wednesday afternoon.

The former Manchester United defender made his explosive comments after Chelsea confirmed Rosenior's departure following a disastrous run of five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring a single goal.

Neville's Scathing Player Criticism

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Neville singled out Cucurella and Fernandez as the experienced players who undermined Rosenior's position at Stamford Bridge. "Come on, Cucurella and Fernandez - experienced players and probably the only two experienced players that Chelsea have got - stitched him up in the last few weeks by calling out the fact that they basically love Maresca," Neville stated.

The pundit was referring to recent comments from both players praising Enzo Maresca, the manager Rosenior replaced when he took over from French club Strasbourg. Chelsea's co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital also control Strasbourg, having appointed Rosenior on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

Ownership Under Fire

Neville didn't stop at criticizing the players, launching a broader attack on Chelsea's ownership structure. "The owners don't have a clue what they are doing," he declared. "They're all over the place. I just don't get it, really."

The Sky Sports pundit specifically questioned Chelsea's policy of offering long-term contracts, describing six- and eight-year agreements as "almost laughable from the start, whether it be for a manager or a player."

Rosenior's Brief Tenure

Liam Rosenior managed just 11 wins in 23 matches across all competitions during his short tenure at Chelsea. Tuesday's comprehensive 3-0 defeat at Brighton proved to be the final straw for the club's hierarchy, prompting the immediate dismissal despite Rosenior having signed a long-term contract.

Calum McFarlane will now take over as interim manager until the end of the season, but Neville believes the damage extends far beyond the coaching staff.

Timing of Dismissal Questioned

"I'm not shocked Liam's leaving the club," Neville admitted. "I'm shocked he's leaving today. I thought it would probably happen at the end of the season. I thought they would persevere until the end of the season after giving him a six-year deal."

The former England international emphasized that Rosenior's dismissal reflects poorly on the club's structure rather than the manager's abilities. "It's not a reflection on Liam at all," Neville insisted. "He's lost a lot of football matches in the last few weeks and he'll be disappointed with that. But it's time for the owners, sporting directors and players to reflect enormously on their role in what's happened."

Broader Club Concerns

Neville expressed concern about Chelsea's overall direction, noting the combination of young players, inexperienced sporting directors, and relatively new ownership. "You need some experience somewhere in the club," he argued, suggesting this lack of institutional knowledge has contributed to the current crisis.

The pundit also predicted fan backlash, stating Chelsea supporters "will be absolutely disgusted by the way this has gone" and that "the owners have got it really badly wrong."

Regarding Rosenior's future, Neville suggested the young manager "probably shouldn't have been advanced as soon as he was into the role" and should have been allowed to develop more gradually. However, he acknowledged that "you don't turn down the Chelsea job" when such opportunities arise.
