Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo could see his playing time at the 2026 World Cup diminish after being outperformed by West Ham's Crysencio Summerville during the Netherlands' 1-0 friendly defeat to Algeria on Wednesday.
Summerville Shines on Debut
Summerville, who was relegated with West Ham this season, made a significant impact on his international debut, earning plaudits from Dutch media. VoetbalPrimeur rated him 7/10, praising his agility and speed, while Gakpo received a disappointing 5.5/10, with critics noting he failed to make a mark after an initial bright start.
Gakpo's Performance Under Scrutiny
The Liverpool star played 81 minutes on the left wing but could not turn the match in his nation's favour. Dutch outlet NOS highlighted Summerville's dangerous runs and ability to hold the ball, suggesting he could compete for minutes on the left flank, Gakpo's natural position.
With Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Gakpo all part of Ronald Koeman's World Cup squad, the emergence of Summerville adds competition. Koeman started Summerville on the right, but his natural left-wing role could threaten Gakpo's place.
If Summerville continues to impress, Gakpo may face reduced minutes in North America this summer. The Liverpool forward must now look over his shoulder as the World Cup approaches.
