All episodes of the classic ITV crime drama Agatha Christie's Miss Marple have been added to Sky's streaming catalogue, giving fans the chance to revisit the beloved series that ran for six series between 2004 and 2013.
The show, based on the bestselling book series by Agatha Christie, starred Geraldine McEwan in the title role for the first three series, with Julia McKenzie taking over from series four onwards. The series adapted Christie's novels and short stories, though not always with strict fidelity to the original plots.
Mixed Adaptations, Open Minds
Longtime Christie fans have noted that the series often deviates from the author's original storylines, but this is generally not seen as a problem. One viewer, describing themselves as a scholar of Christie's works, acknowledged that the adaptations vary widely in quality but advised newcomers to watch with an open mind, saying: “You need to watch these adaptations with an open mind, purists of Christie’s work are likely to watch with unease.”
Some episodes are considered standouts, including The Blue Geranium, A Murder is Announced, and The Moving Finger, all of which can be enjoyed individually or as part of the series.
Creative Liberties and Star Cast
One creative choice that divided opinion was writing Miss Marple into adaptations of Christie novels where she never appeared in the original text. While some traditional fans disagreed, most reviewers agreed this strategy allowed the show to draw on a wider pool of Christie's material.
The performances are a major selling point, with one fan comparing McEwan and McKenzie across decades of Marple portrayals, admitting they change their mind about which is “the best Marple” every time they watch the other.
The series also served as a launching pad for many actors who have since achieved international fame, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Carey Mulligan, Hugh Bonneville, and Hannah Waddingham. Even historical figures make appearances, with Winston Churchill seen in The Sittaford Mystery and Noël Coward in 4.50 from Paddington.
