Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has suggested Aston Villa boss Unai Emery as the ideal candidate to replace Ruben Amorim, who left the club on Monday after a 14-month tenure. Foster described Emery as 'right at the top' of his game, but acknowledged that Villa fans would be unhappy with the suggestion and that it is unclear whether Emery would be interested in the role.
Amorim's departure followed a 1-1 draw with Leeds United and reports of a falling-out with the club's hierarchy. The Portuguese coach's insistence on a 3-4-3 system caused friction with the board and players. Manchester United finished a record-low 15th in the Premier League last season and currently sit sixth after 20 games, with eight wins, seven draws and five losses.
Foster, speaking to talkSPORT, argued that United need a manager with 'a big character, a lot of authority and almost a bit of an aura' to relieve pressure on the squad. He also warned of internal power struggles, saying 'there's too many chefs trying to stir the broth' at the club, with multiple figures reluctant to give up their influence.
Emery has impressed at Aston Villa, leading them to consistent top-half finishes and European qualification. However, doubts remain over whether he would leave Villa Park, where he has strong backing from the hierarchy. The 54-year-old previously managed Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain with mixed results.
Darren Fletcher has been named interim coach while the search for a permanent manager continues. The next manager will inherit a club that spent over £200 million on signings last summer without significant improvement, requiring a clear plan to restore stability.
